How is the Saatva Mattress Made?

As stated previously, the Saatva is unique from the other mattresses we have reviewed because it is not an all foam bed-in-a-box. Saatva opted for the more traditional design of innerspring and combination, some may say it is outdated but there’s a reason that these mattresses have been popular for so long. For this review we will look at Saatva’s most popular design, the Luxury Firm model.

Cover – The cover is another area where they stray from the competition. Most of the other brands use a polyester blend for their cover, Saatva uses one that is 100% cotton. It does not sacrifice breathability and it is very soft and comfortable.

Pillow top – This layer is comprised a of thin section of memory foam on top of individually wrapped coils. This gives the bed a lot of bounce and the sleeper will feel as if they are on top of the mattress rather than stuck in the memory foam. The individual wrapping of each coil promotes airflow and temperature control.

Support – Under the pillow top is the support system of the entire mattress. This layer contains steel coals and a foam edge support that wraps around the coils. This gives the mattress additional bounce and lift that is typical of this style of mattress.

How Firm is the Saatva Mattress?

Construction of the mattress is important, but even more important is how the mattress feels. The first thing most consumers think when looking at how a mattress feels is how firm is it?

Firmness can feel different for different types of people, this can be attributed to body size, personal preference, and a few other factors. For that reason, we had multiple people test the Saatva mattress for its firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest, and then averaged the scores. After testing it we arrived on an average of 6.75 out of 10, giving it a medium firm feel.

Even though Saatva is partly a memory foam mattress, the majority of its construction is made up of their coil system. That coil system provides a pretty firm mattress with a lot of bounce. Keep in mind that this is the Luxury Firm model and Saatva also has the Plush Soft, which the company ranks at about 3-5 out of 10 firmness, and the Firm model, which sits at about 8 out of 10. So, if you are looking for a different type of firmness but like the construction of the Saatva they have some good options for you to choose from.

Does the Saatva Mattress Relieve Pressure?

Pressure relief is a key factor that consumers consider when purchasing a mattress. After a long day you may have some aches and pains and buying the right mattress can help relieve that so you can wake up feeling fresh and ready to go. Let’s take a closer look at each sleeping position to see how Saatva stacks up on pressure relief.

Back – While lying on your back, you will not feel much sinkage compared to the all foam mattresses on the market. The memory foam will provide some nice pressure relief while the coils will keep you feeling nice and buoyant. If you move around a lot while you are sleeping this mattress will not restrict you at all.

Side – This mattress may not be the most comfortable for side sleepers. You will likely feel some pressure in your hips and shoulders. This mattress does not have the softness that most strict side sleepers look for, a better option may be Saatva’s Plush Soft model.

Stomach – Saatva’s use of coils will be beneficial to stomach sleepers. The “on top” feel will provide good alignment for spine because your hips are lifted to be in line with your shoulders. This mattress is good for stomach sleepers, but you may want to go with Saatva’s Firm model for even more support. If you are a combo sleeper this mattress is an excellent option for you.

Motion Transfer

In theory, the Saatva Luxury Firm model should have high motion transfer because the mattress is very bouncy. High motion transfer means you will feel motion from other places on the mattress, this is important for people sharing their bed with a partner (or a pet).

When putting Saatva through its paces in terms of motion transfer, our theory is indeed correct. There is quite of bit of motion that is transferred throughout the mattress. This is something to take into consideration if you are a light sleeper and share your bed with someone who likes to toss and turn.

Will you Sink into the Saatva Mattress?

Going into the sinkage testing we were pretty sure that the coil system would prevent a lot of sinkage.  After testing objects of different weights to simulate different parts of the body, it was determined that the sinkage was average to below average. This means that when you are lying on this mattress you will feel that your are on top of it as opposed to a lot of memory foam mattresses where you feel like your are more in it.

Should you buy the Saatva Mattress?
