Tuft & Needle has made headway into the bed-in-a-box market by being a budget option. Since that initial success, they have added more mattresses to their product line to compete with other all foam mattress companies. On the other hand, Saatva has made their name by offering a luxury mattress with a coil system that is cheaper than it’s retail counterpart. Both of these online mattress companies offer multiple great products but for the purposes of this review we are going to look at Tuft & Needle’s Original Mattress and Saatva’s Luxury Firm mattress.

How Tuft & Needle Mattress is made:

Tuft & Needle has their own proprietary foam that allows their foam mattresses to have a unique feel from any others on the market. Their Original Mattress is also unique in that it only contains two foam layers.

Cover – Tuft & Needle’s cover is not removable but it uses a polyester blend that is breathable and quite comfortable.

Comfort Layer – The first layer of foam is made up of 3” of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary foam. It is designed to provide mobility and bounce. In addition, this layer has some cooling gel to keep the mattress cool.

Foundation Layer – The foundation of this mattress is made up of 7” of HD poly foam. This firm and sturdy foam gives the mattress its overall shape and firmness.

How Saatva Mattress is made:

As mentioned previously, Saatva uses a coil system as opposed to the all foam construction of the Tuft & Needle mattress.

Cover – Saatva’s cover is 100% cotton for premium softness and comfort. Using cotton sacrifices some breathability but this mattress is cool overall so it is not much of an issue.

Pillow Top – The pillow top has a layer of memory foam on top of individually wrapped coils. The coils provide a lot of bounce and you will feel on top of the mattress rather than in it.

Support – The support layer is comprised of even more coils wrapped around by foam to provide edge support. This layer gives the additional lift and bounce that you would typically associate with this type of mattress.

Tuft & Needle vs. Saatva: Key Differences in Design

Here are some of the key differences you may want to consider when debating these mattresses.

Tuft & Needle vs. Saatva: The Feel

These mattresses use completely different materials in their construction, so the feel of them is completely different even though their firmness is relatively similar. We will get into detail on how each mattress feels by sleeping position, that way you have a clear idea if either of these mattresses will be the one for you.

Is the Tuft & Needle Mattress Firm?

The Tuft & Needle is fairly firm for a foam mattress. On a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is the firmest, our testers determined this mattress to be a 7.5 out of 10. This means it is medium firm to firm.

Back – When sleeping on your back you will immediately feel the contouring of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary foam. The firmness also allows for good mobility but heavier folks may find this mattress to be too firm for sleeping on your back.

Side – Side sleepers may want to look at Tuft & Needle’s other options, because our testers mostly felt that the Original Mattress is too firm for sleeping on your side because of the firmness at the shoulder region.

Stomach – Stomach sleepers will like this mattress, the response to movement and the firmness make a comfortable night of sleep mixed with good spinal alignment.

Is Saatva Mattress Soft?

The coils system may give this mattress a strong bounce, but what did our testers determine the firmness to be? After averaging the scores, our testers determined the firmness to be a 6.75 out of 10 on the firmness scale. So, it is less firm than Tuft & Needle but the construction gives it a unique feel.

Back – Even with the layer of memory foam on the top of this mattress, you will not feel much sinkage when lying on your back. However, you will feel some pressure relief from it. This mattress also responds well to pressure, so movement will be free and easy.

Side – Side sleepers tend to prefer a softer mattress for their shoulders to press into. This allows for good spinal alignment. This mattress may be to firm for those folks, Saatva’s soft mattress might be a better choice for them.

Stomach – Stomach sleepers will experience good spinal alignment on this mattress. This is because of the firmness and bounciness that keeps you feeling on top of the mattress. If you want something even firmer, Saatva offers that too!

Bounce and Sinkage

As expected, the tests show that these mattresses differ greatly in the bounce department. The foam construction of Tuft & Needle’s mattress does not have very much bounce at all. Whereas, Saatva has an extremely bouncy mattress, thanks to all those coils.

When testing sinkage, we found that these mattresses were closer than we first anticipated. The firmness and top layer of Tuft & Needle’s mattress did not allow for much sinkage. Saatva’s memory foam allowed for a little sinkage, but the coils will keep you from sinking much at all.
